Avoca alternative for owner-operated contractors

Avoca is a well-funded AI front office built for busy service companies with a team on the phones. If you run a smaller shop and mainly need every new web lead called fast, here's how HelloSetter compares, and when Avoca is the better pick.

What Avoca is and who it is built for

Avoca calls itself "The AI Workforce for Service Businesses." Its AI customer service rep answers calls, texts and web chats, books jobs around the clock, escalates emergencies and syncs bookings to your CRM. Around that it sells a speed-to-lead product, outbound text-and-call campaigns to past customers, a self-service scheduler, a direct Google Local Services Ads integration, and a tool called Coach that scores every call and flags missed opportunities for managers.

It's built for home-service companies: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, restoration, pest control, garage door, remodeling, movers and more, plus auto repair. Avoca's homepage says it runs "across hundreds of home services front offices, from growing shops to multi-location operations." Its own funding announcement describes a typical customer as a 30-person HVAC company whose phones, leads and scheduling are stretched thin.

Avoca is also well funded. In April 2026 it announced a Series B at a $1 billion valuation, with more than $125 million raised across its Seed, Series A and Series B rounds, from investors including Kleiner Perkins, Meritech, General Catalyst and Y Combinator. That money pays for a broad product and a sales team, which shows up in how it's sold.

Avoca's real strengths

  • One system for the whole front office. Inbound calls, texts, chat, lead response and campaigns sit together, so your office manager isn't juggling separate tools.
  • Deep field-software ties. Avoca lists itself as a certified ServiceTitan app with a deep CRM integration, shows Housecall Pro and FieldRoutes on its site, and its speed-to-lead page claims 20+ integrations plus a REST API and webhooks.
  • Fast response from many lead sources. Avoca says leads from web forms, Google LSA, Facebook, Yelp and Angi flow into one system, and its FAQ says it responds "often within 30 seconds."
  • Manager tools. Call scoring and analytics matter when you have a room of CSRs to coach and several brands or branches to watch.

Where HelloSetter is different

HelloSetter is narrower on purpose. It doesn't try to run your front office. It does one job: when a new lead comes in from your website or a lead service, it calls that person by AI voice within 60 seconds. In our testing, the call starts about a second after the lead arrives, while the homeowner is still looking at their phone.

On the call it qualifies the lead, handles the common objections homeowners raise, and books an estimate on the HelloSetter Calendar. You subscribe to that calendar on your phone with an iCal link, and HelloSetter reads your own calendar link so it doesn't book over a job you already have.

If nobody picks up, voicemail detection kicks in and HelloSetter tries again, up to 16 times over several days, always inside calling hours. If the lead calls back, a local number answers. It only calls leads who gave consent, and you get an email summary after every call, so you know what was said before you show up.

Prices you can see before you talk to anyone

HelloSetter lists its prices on the pricing page: $197, $347 or $697 a month at the founding rate, for 75, 150 or 400 leads. There is no setup fee, no annual contract, and a free 14-day pilot after the setup call. For a small shop deciding whether a tool is worth it, knowing the number up front saves a sales cycle.

Set up in one call, no office manager needed

Lead sources are connected on a 30-minute setup call: website forms, Google Sheets, and webhook or Zapier feeds, for example from Angi, Thumbtack or Google LSA. You don't need ServiceTitan, a dispatcher or someone to manage the system. For an owner who sells the jobs and also works them, that matters. The work it saves is the callback you'd otherwise make from a roof or a crawl space three hours later.

What HelloSetter won't do

To be clear about the limits: HelloSetter doesn't text leads, doesn't answer your main business line, doesn't run campaigns to past customers, and doesn't push bookings into ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro. It's a lead caller. If any of those gaps is a deal-breaker for you, the next section is the one to read.

Where Avoca is the better choice

Avoca does a lot more than HelloSetter. If your problem is bigger than slow callbacks on new web leads, it's likely the better fit. Be honest with yourself about which of these apply:

  • You need every inbound call answered. HelloSetter answers callbacks from leads it called, but it isn't a receptionist for every call to your business. Avoca's AI CSR is built for that.
  • You want texting. HelloSetter doesn't send SMS. Avoca lists SMS alongside calls, including drip campaigns.
  • You run on ServiceTitan and want bookings to land there. HelloSetter has no native ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro integration; it books onto the HelloSetter Calendar. Avoca is a certified ServiceTitan app.
  • You have a team to manage. Call scoring, analytics and multi-location reporting are built for a call center, not a one-truck shop.
  • You want to re-book past customers. Avoca runs outbound campaigns to your existing list. HelloSetter only calls new leads.

If two or more of those describe you, Avoca, or a full front-office tool like it, is probably the right fit, and HelloSetter would be a second tool at best.

Pricing compared

Avoca doesn't publish prices on its website. You book a demo and get a quote. Contract length, setup fees and how usage is billed are not publicly listed either. Some third-party sites publish estimates, but they don't come from Avoca, so we've left them out. If you're talking to Avoca, get those numbers in writing on the demo.

HelloSetter: $197 / $347 / $697 a month at the founding rate (regularly $297 / $497 / $997) for 75 / 150 / 400 leads. Each lead over your plan is $2. No setup fee, month-to-month, and a free 14-day pilot after the setup call. The only variable cost is the $2 extra-lead charge, so a busy month costs a little more and a slow one doesn't.

When you compare, look at the cost of a full year, not one month. A tool with a setup fee and a long term costs more to try and more to leave, even when the monthly number looks close. With HelloSetter, the most you risk after the free pilot is one month.

Questions to ask on any demo

  • What is the monthly minimum, and what does it include?
  • Is there a setup, onboarding or implementation fee?
  • How long is the contract, and how do I cancel?
  • How are minutes, calls or leads billed past what is included?
  • Is there a trial or pilot before I commit?

How to switch, or try both

This doesn't have to be either-or. Some shops run a front-office tool for inbound calls and a separate caller for new web leads. If you're weighing the two, a simple test works:

  1. Pull last month's lead count by source, and note how fast someone actually called each one back.
  2. Book the HelloSetter setup call and connect your website form, sheet or Zapier feed. It takes about 30 minutes.
  3. Run the free 14-day pilot on new web leads only. Leave your phones exactly as they are.
  4. Book an Avoca demo in the same window and ask the pricing questions above.
  5. Compare the results: leads reached, estimates booked, and what each option costs a month.

If you're already on Avoca and only want the lead-calling piece, check your agreement for notice terms first, then point your web-lead feed (form, sheet or webhook) at HelloSetter. Nothing about your phone line has to change.

Hear it yourself

The fastest way to judge an AI caller is to talk to it. Call (307) 414-8089, or tap "Call me now" on the homepage and HelloSetter will call you, the same way it calls a new lead. Then book a demo with Avoca and compare the two on your own terms.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Avoca AI cost?

Avoca doesn't list prices on its website. Pricing is quoted after a demo. Ask about the monthly minimum, setup fees, contract length and how usage is billed before you sign.

Is HelloSetter cheaper than Avoca?

We can't say for sure because Avoca doesn't publish prices. HelloSetter's are public: $197, $347 or $697 a month at the founding rate, month-to-month, with no setup fee. Get an Avoca quote and compare.

Does HelloSetter answer all my inbound calls like Avoca?

No. HelloSetter calls new web leads and answers callbacks from those leads on a local number. It isn't a receptionist for every call to your business. If you need that, Avoca or an answering service is a better fit.

Does HelloSetter integrate with ServiceTitan?

Not natively. HelloSetter books onto the HelloSetter Calendar, which you subscribe to by iCal link. Avoca lists itself as a certified ServiceTitan app, so if bookings must land in ServiceTitan, Avoca fits better.

Can I try HelloSetter before paying?

Yes. After a 30-minute setup call you get a free 14-day pilot. After that it is month-to-month with no setup fee.
