Google Local Services Ads for contractors: how LSA works and how to rank
Local Services Ads are the listings with the Google Verified badge above the normal results. You pay per lead instead of per click, and how you answer the phone affects where you show up.

What Google Local Services Ads are
Search “plumber near me” and the first thing you often see is a short row of businesses with a rating, a phone number and a Google Verified badge. Those are Google Local Services Ads, usually shortened to LSA. A homeowner can call, message or request a booking straight from the ad, and you pay when they contact you. Clicks cost nothing.
Google describes the deal as paying only for leads related to your business and the services you offer. What counts as a charged lead, and what doesn’t, is covered in our LSA cost per lead guide.
Which contractors can run LSA
LSA is only open to certain service categories, and Google has an eligibility checker on its getting started page. Most home services qualify: plumbing, HVAC, roofing, electrical, cleaning, pest control, landscaping and more. Inside each category you choose the job types you want leads for, such as water heater installation but not drain cleaning, and the ZIP codes or areas you cover.
How to sign up for Google Local Services Ads
- Check that your category is eligible in your area.
- Link or create your Google Business Profile. LSA pulls your name, address and hours from it.
- Add your license or business registration, depending on what your state and trade require.
- Set up billing and a weekly budget.
- Complete screening and verification (next section). Some categories can start with pre-badge ads that take leads before every check is finished.
- Pick your job types, service area and business hours, and turn on the lead types you can answer: calls, messages, booking requests.
Pre-badge ads aren’t available for garage door services or locksmiths, according to Google’s getting started page. Everyone still has to finish all the checks to show the Google Verified badge.
Screening, background checks and the Google Verified badge
Google’s screening page says the process may include background, business registration, insurance and license checks, plus minimum review requirements that vary by category and location. All owners must complete a criminal background check, and in applicable categories so must every employee, independent contractor or temp worker who goes to customers’ homes; office staff are excluded. Google doesn’t charge for the background checks. If someone fails one, the business waits 30 days to reapply, and 180 days after a second denial.
Passing gives you the Google Verified badge. It replaced the old Google Guaranteed badge, and the money-back guarantee that came with it has ended; our Google Guaranteed guide explains what changed.
How Google ranks Local Services Ads

Google’s ranking page lists what goes into the order of ads:
- Your bid, the most you are willing to pay for a lead.
- The job and location in the customer’s search, and how relevant your business is to it.
- Responsiveness. Google says missed calls may hurt it.
- Profile quality: your rating, number of reviews and average response time.
- Which lead types you accept. Turning on messages and booking requests gives customers more ways to reach you.
- Good photos and the verification checks you have completed.
Responsiveness is the factor most contractors underrate. When we called 281 roofing, HVAC and plumbing companies during business hours in October 2026, 130 calls rang out with nobody and no voicemail. On LSA, each of those is a missed lead you may pay for and a mark against your ranking. Forwarding unanswered calls to an answering service fixes both.
What LSA costs compared with Google search ads
Google search ads (the text ads with “Sponsored” above them) charge per click, so you also pay for clicks that never call. LocaliQ’s benchmark of 3,211 US home-service search campaigns gives the cost per lead for those. Set it next to SearchLight Digital’s LSA benchmark and LSA comes out cheaper per lead for every trade in both:
| Trade | LSA, cost per lead | Search ads, cost per click | Search ads, cost per lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plumbing | $57 | $10.49 | $129.02 |
| HVAC (air conditioning) | $51 | $9.68 | $127.74 |
| Electrical | $39 | $12.18 | $93.69 |
| Roofing | $106.87 (spring 2026) | $10.70 | $228.15 |
Search ads still have a place: they show for searches LSA doesn’t cover, you control the text and the landing page, and you can target narrow jobs. Many shops run both. Our guide to Google Ads for plumbers goes through a search campaign step by step.
Budget, bidding and the move to Google Ads
You set a weekly budget and Google spends around it, more in some weeks and less in others. Google recommends its Maximize leads bidding and suggests a budget of at least 10 leads a week. In 2026 Google started moving LSA accounts into Google Ads as Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals, where manual maximum bids go away. The details and dates are in our LSA cost guide.
Getting more out of every LSA lead
- Answer calls live during the hours you list, or forward the ones you miss to something that answers and books.
- Reply to messages and booking requests within minutes. Average response time is part of your profile quality.
- Ask every happy customer for a Google review. Rating and review count both count.
- Rate bad leads in your dashboard so they can be credited; see how to dispute Google LSA leads.
- Track cost per booked job by job type, and turn off job types that never book.
HelloSetter, which we make, does the first two for you: forwarded calls get answered day and night, and message or booking-request leads get a call within 60 seconds that books the visit.
Frequently asked questions
What are Google Local Services Ads?
Pay-per-lead ads for local service businesses that show above Google’s normal results with a rating, phone number and Google Verified badge. You pay when a customer calls, messages or requests a booking through the ad.
How much do Google Local Services Ads cost?
There is no monthly fee; you pay per lead within a weekly budget. A February 2026 benchmark of 888 contractors averaged $53 a lead: electrical $39, HVAC $51, plumbing $57. Roofing runs higher, about $107 in one spring 2026 dataset.
How long does it take to get approved for LSA?
Google doesn’t give an overall timeline. Business profile verification can take up to 24 hours to show as complete, background checks take longer, and a failed check means a 30-day wait before reapplying. Some categories can run pre-badge ads while checks finish.
Is LSA better than Google search ads for contractors?
Per lead it has been cheaper in the benchmarks we compared, for example about $57 vs $129 for plumbing. Search ads give you more control over keywords and landing pages, so many contractors run both.
How do I rank higher in Google Local Services Ads?
Google lists your bid, relevance, reviews and rating, response time, missed calls, the lead types you accept, photos and completed verification checks. Answering every call and replying to messages fast are the cheapest improvements.
