Google Ads for plumbers: Local Services Ads vs search ads, and how to set them up

Plumbers have two ways to advertise on Google: pay per lead with Local Services Ads, or pay per click with search ads. Benchmarks and our own calls to plumbing companies show where the money goes.

Two kinds of Google Ads for plumbers

Google Local Services Ads sit at the very top with your rating and a Google Verified badge, and you pay per lead: a call, a message or a booking request. Search ads are the “Sponsored” text ads below them, and you pay per click whether or not the person calls. Most plumbing companies that advertise on Google run both. How LSA works, from sign-up to ranking, is in our Google Local Services Ads guide.

What Google Ads cost a plumbing company

LSA: SearchLight Digital, February 2026 (888 contractors). Search ads: LocaliQ, 3,211 US home-service campaigns, Apr 2024 to Mar 2025.
Local Services AdsSearch ads
You pay forEach leadEach click
Plumbing cost per clickNone$10.49
Plumbing cost per lead$57$129.02
Leads that booked a job44.5%Not reported
Clicks that became leadsNo clicks charged7.63%

The two studies count leads differently, so treat the gap as direction rather than an exact saving. The LocaliQ benchmark and SearchLight’s LSA data both point the same way: per lead, LSA has been the cheaper start. The LSA cost guide breaks LSA down further.

Setting up a plumbing search campaign

  1. One campaign per type of work you want: emergency repairs, water heaters, drains, repiping. Each gets its own ads and budget.
  2. Keywords with intent and place: “emergency plumber [city]”, “water heater replacement near me”, “burst pipe repair”. Phrase and exact match keep you off loose searches.
  3. Location targeting by radius or ZIP codes you serve, set to people in the area, not people interested in it.
  4. An ad schedule that matches when someone answers. Paying for 2 a.m. clicks only makes sense if a call at 2 a.m. gets answered.
  5. Call assets, so the phone number shows in the ad, and call tracking to see which calls came from which ad.
  6. A landing page per service with the phone number at the top, your service area, reviews and a short form.

Negative keywords that save plumbers money

Most wasted spend in plumbing search ads comes from people who will never hire you. Add these as negative keywords from day one, then check the search terms report every week and add more:

  • Jobs and training: jobs, hiring, salary, apprentice, school, license exam.
  • Do it yourself: DIY, how to, video, parts, Home Depot, Lowe’s.
  • Jobs you don’t do: septic, commercial, mobile home, if those aren’t yours.
  • Free and cheap: free, cheap, coupon, if you don’t compete on price.

The part that isn’t in Google Ads: answering the phone

Ads only buy the call. In October 2026 we called 73 plumbing companies during their business hours; a person answered 35 of them, and another 35 rang out with nobody and no voicemail. A homeowner with a leak who hits a ringing phone calls the next ad. On LSA, Google also says missed calls can hurt your ranking.

Before you raise the budget, check how many of last month’s ad calls were answered. If the answer is “not enough”, forward the missed ones to a plumbing answering service that books the job, and make sure form and message leads get a call back in minutes. HelloSetter, our product, does both for plumbers; plans start at $697 a month for 20 booked appointments.

Frequently asked questions

How much do Google Ads cost for plumbers?

In LocaliQ’s benchmark, plumbing search ads averaged $10.49 per click and $129.02 per lead. Plumbing Local Services Ads averaged $57 per lead in SearchLight Digital’s February 2026 benchmark. Your market can be far above or below these.

Are Local Services Ads or search ads better for plumbers?

Local Services Ads have been cheaper per lead and are simpler to run, so most plumbers start there. Search ads add reach for specific jobs and areas, and give you control over the ad text and landing page.

What keywords should a plumber bid on?

Searches with a job and a place, such as emergency plumber plus your city, water heater replacement near me or drain cleaning plus your city. Use phrase or exact match and add negative keywords for jobs, DIY and parts.

Should plumbers run Google Ads at night?

Only if night calls get answered. Emergency work pays well after hours, but an unanswered call is money spent for nothing. Forward night calls to an answering service that books the job, or pause ads until morning.
