The short answer
Yes, you can pause Thumbtack leads. For a full break, use Hide my business: in the Pro app go to Services, tap the three-dot menu and choose "Hide my business temporarily", then pick an end date up to 30 days out. For one service you no longer want, pause its job preferences instead. If you only want fewer leads, lower your weekly budget. Thumbtack's own steps can change, so check its help center if a menu looks different.
Option 1: Hide your business (pause all leads)
This is the closest thing Thumbtack has to a pause button. Instead of turning off each service or closing your account, you hide your business from search results for a set time.
- Open the Thumbtack Pro app and go to Services.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose "Hide my business temporarily".
- Pick the date you want leads to start again, up to 30 days away, and confirm.
According to Thumbtack's help article, your business goes live again automatically at 8 a.m. your local time on the end date, and you can come back early from the Services page. If you run more than one business profile, you can hide one or all of them.
Option 2: Pause one service
If one service keeps costing more than it earns, say small repairs that never turn into full jobs, pause just that one. Thumbtack's job preferences article describes the steps: go to Services, pick the service, tap Pause under "Job preferences", give a reason and confirm. You stop getting leads and appearing in search for that service, and Thumbtack keeps your preferences so you can switch it back on later.
A Thumbtack moderator explained in a community thread that with job preferences off, you don't show in search results for that service and only have access to Opportunities. That post is a few years old, so check the app.
Option 3: Lower your weekly budget (slow leads down)
Your lead price is what you pay per lead. Your weekly budget caps what you spend across all services. Thumbtack's budget article gives the example of a $10 lead price and a $90 budget: after nine leads you hit the cap and stop getting leads until the budget resets the following Monday. You can raise it any time and the change takes effect right away. Opportunities don't count against the weekly budget.
Lowering the budget is the right move when you want fewer leads, not none: a busy month, a crew member out, or a category you're testing.
Why blocking days on your calendar isn't enough
It's tempting to block your availability and call it a pause. Pros on the Thumbtack Community report that this doesn't fully stop leads, because customers can say they're open to other times. Use Hide my business for a real break.
Don't deactivate your account to take a break
Deactivating is permanent. Thumbtack's article on how to stop receiving and paying for leads warns that it deletes your reviews, profile information, projects and account balance, and can't be undone. Reviews are hard to earn back, so only deactivate if you're leaving Thumbtack for good.
Which option to use
| Your situation | Best option | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Vacation or a family break | Hide my business | No leads for up to 30 days, back automatically |
| Booked solid for a few weeks | Hide my business, or a lower budget | No leads, or fewer leads |
| One service doesn't pay | Pause that service | No leads for that service only |
| Fewer leads, not none | Lower weekly budget | Leads stop when the cap is hit, until Monday |
| Leaving Thumbtack for good | Deactivate | Permanent: reviews and profile deleted |
Before you pause
- Reply to every open lead and say when you can start, so customers who are waiting on you can decide.
- Note your current lead prices and budget, so you can put them back the way they were.
- Look at which services actually paid back. Pausing is a good moment to cut the ones that don't. Our guide on whether Thumbtack is worth it walks through the math.
When you turn leads back on
The first leads after a break are the easiest to lose, because you're back to juggling jobs and the phone. Reply within minutes, then call: Thumbtack customers usually contact several pros, and the first real conversation tends to win. If paid leads keep going quiet, read Thumbtack leads not responding. If you can't call fast while you're on a job, an AI appointment setter can call each new lead within a minute and book the estimate for you.
Frequently asked questions
Can you pause Thumbtack leads?
Yes. Hide your business to pause all leads for up to 30 days, pause the job preferences for a single service, or lower your weekly budget to get fewer leads.
How long can I hide my business on Thumbtack?
Up to 30 days at a time. It comes back automatically at 8 a.m. your local time on the end date, and you can go live earlier from the Services page.
Will I still be charged while my Thumbtack business is hidden?
You won't get regular leads while hidden. You'll still see Opportunities, but Thumbtack charges for those only if you reach out and the customer replies, and you can turn them off in Notifications.
Does pausing delete my Thumbtack reviews?
Hiding your business or pausing a service is temporary. Deactivating your account is the step that deletes your reviews, profile, projects and balance, and it can't be undone.
How do I stop Thumbtack leads for just one service?
Go to Services, pick the service, tap Pause under Job preferences, give a reason and confirm. Thumbtack remembers your settings for when you turn it back on.
